I am so excited to share my journey of the new project with you on this blog which is regarding Modern Contemporary Crockery Unit.
So, the lovely couple Ramkumar & Maithili (Codename:RaMa) had come up with the requirements of doing a crockery unit and terrace area for them. The brief was simple that they want a lot of storage and it should blend with other part of the room which was already done 3 years back when they moved into the house. So, this simple brief came with a challenge to match the existing interior so that the space looks cohesive.
The other areas which was a TV unit, a console and sofa had a modern appeal with grey and white tones but with a touch of wood here and there. Hence that gave me a base to go for material and colour palette.
First let us look at how the space looked like. We took all the measurements of existing space so that we can put everything on CAD and minimize any possibilities of error in future. Basically, this forms the basis of all the future design for any area.
We had given them two options for the crockery unit. One on the small wall and one of the big wall. Look below for the two options that we have suggested.

Further going deep in further meetings and discussions we understood all their requirements very well such as the colour they would prefer, the material that we should select such as framed fluted glass, mix of paint and laminate, wall panelling etc and made the elevation of the crockery unit with all the details. Also, after combinations of open and close niches we freeze on one open niche. Of course, there were couple of revisions for the front elevation and sharing the one which we had finalized.
The only thing in the structure we have changed is the position of Switch board which was on the other side earlier (You can have a look at the earlier position in the existing structural plan).
The way we have described the things along with all the details in front elevation helped them to understand things really well. Along with explanation of components of structure on CAD we also gave detailed dimensional layout with external and internal details that form the basic technical document. Such document for any space/furniture item is used by contractors (carpenters, electricians, painters, glass vendors etc)/designers as well to take out quotation, this makes sure that we are on the same page and most importantly technically and ergonomically correct.
Have a look on the detailed dimensional layout below and try to understand what I am trying to say. I feel this is really important stage as these forms the basis of Execution phase in which everyone uses this document to actually build things. So, no chances of mistake/ error here. Once this is freeze and we go ahead to execution phase any changes will impact the budget. We do tell the importance of the same to the client as well and once we freeze the same, we shall not be doing changes.
Above two elevations may look same but definitely they are not. The Front Elevation (Dimension layout) gives the outer dimensions of the furniture however Front elevation (Internal with dimension) shows internal details along with dimensions. These details include position of shelf, drawer compartment details etc.
Once we are done with front elevation next step was to move for laminate, material and colour selection. The material and colour section are important and the same I will cover in my next blog post. In the meantime, do let me know what are your thoughts on detailing that we do… It’s worth it right?
